Abstract
The internet is central in contemporary political communication. Yet, political science has addressed this topic only marginally in its central debates or outlets. This review maps the available literature on the use of the internet and digital tools in political communication. I will map central arguments, present important findings, and perspectives for the field's future development. In this, I will focus on the available literature on the history of ideas with regard to political effects of the internet, the internet's use by political elites and citizens, and potential effects thereof. Finally, I will discuss systematic problems in the literature and offer a short discussion of perspectives for future research.
